Cats are Liquid: A Light In The Shadows is a 2D platformer game developed by Last Quarter Studios, and the first game of the Cats Are Liquid franchise. The game was first released on the December 7th, 2015 for itch.io and the Google Play Store and later released on June 25th, 2016 for the Steam platform.

Characters[]

The game contains few characters, including Lumi as the main protagonist and the cat which the player controls, the Companion (unlockable in World 4 and inside the Companion level pack) and the Purple Cat, of whom appears regularly in rooms, but does not contribute to the storyline.

Worlds[]

Main Worlds[]

The game is structured with 9 worlds, each containing 10 distinct rooms. The rooms contain damaging items (indicated as orange) and a concluding room door. The last room for each world (excluding the last room of World 9) is a Neon Room. In said rooms, the cat's vision is significantly decreased, and must instead use the cat's glowing characteristic to light up the area.

Level Packs[]

After the player has completed these 9 Worlds, an additional two level packs, namely Companion and The Reset are unlocked.

The Companion pack allows the player to play as the companion. This level pack is split into 3 worlds: the boost phase, the jump phase, and the ghost phase. The boost phase allows the companion to boost across large areas, usually to avoid death into the void. The jump phase allows the companion to jump. The ghost phase allows the companion to turn into a ghost-like figure, in this state, the companion is unable to move and is invulnerable to any incoming damage. These levels end once the companion reaches Lumi.

The Reset pack consists of one world, and has similar gameplay to the main worlds. The first room of this level pack is called "Void". The level pack mentions something about the purple cat. After the credits, the game recites the text on World 1, Room 1.

"The cat was going through a set of rooms that felt like it was continuing. The owner was acting weird and locked her in here. He said she reminded him of someone. She couldn't remember who."

Controls[]

The character is controlled with simple controls, alterable within the game's control settings. During the main worlds and level packs, the cat may take damage from damaging obstacles indicated as orange which each remove one hitpoint (excluding lava, which removes all three). If the cat loses all of these hitpoints, the cat is taken to the start of the room, or the last checkpoint of which the player reached.
